Coffee from Yemen
Yemen - Where It All Began
Yemen is the cradle of commercial coffee cultivation. Coffee was first exported to the world through the port of Mocha (al-Mukha) in the 15th century – hence the name "Mocha" for coffee.
Unique Cultivation
Yemeni coffee grows on steep terrace fields at elevations of 1,500-2,500 meters. Plants are cultivated without chemicals and often without irrigation – a tradition unchanged for centuries.
Flavor Profile
- Wild fruit and dried berries
- Spices: cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg
- Wine-like, complex acidity
- Chocolate and tobacco in the finish
Natural Processing
Nearly all Yemeni coffee is natural (dry) processed – cherries dry on rooftop terraces in the desert sun. This gives the coffee its characteristic wild, fruity aromas.
Extremely Rare and Expensive
Due to political instability and small production volumes, Yemeni coffee is among the rarest and most expensive in the world. Genuine lots are a privilege for connoisseurs.
