Single Origin vs. Blend

Two Philosophies

The choice between single origin and blend represents two valid approaches to coffee. Neither is inherently superior — they serve different purposes and pleasures.

Single Origin

Coffee from one specific source — a single country, region, farm, or even a specific lot within a farm.

Advantages

  • Traceability — you know exactly where your coffee comes from
  • Distinctive character — unique flavors reflecting terroir, variety, and processing
  • Seasonal freshness — offerings rotate with harvest cycles
  • Educational — explore different origins and expand your palate

Considerations

  • Availability changes — your favorite may not return next season
  • Less consistency — each lot is unique
  • Can be challenging in milk — delicate flavors may get lost

Blend

A combination of coffees from different origins, carefully mixed to achieve a specific flavor profile.

Advantages

  • Consistency — roasters can maintain the same profile year-round
  • Balance — combining strengths of different origins (body from Brazil, acidity from Ethiopia)
  • Versatility — designed to work across brewing methods, especially espresso
  • Milk-friendly — crafted to cut through milk

Considerations

  • Less traceable — individual component origins may not be listed
  • Can mask quality issues — though reputable roasters blend for quality, not concealment

Our Recommendation

At Röstschmiede, we offer both — and recommend both. Use our blends for daily espresso and milk drinks where consistency matters. Explore our single origins for pour-over and cupping adventures where you want to taste something distinctive and traceable. The best approach is to enjoy the full spectrum.
