Common mistakes and how to fix them
When Espresso Doesn't Taste Right
Even with good beans and an expensive machine, espresso can go wrong. Here are the most common problems and their solutions.
Too Sour / Too Bright
- Problem: Under-extraction - too little dissolved
- Solution: Grind finer, extend shot time, increase temperature
Too Bitter / Burnt
- Problem: Over-extraction - too much dissolved
- Solution: Grind coarser, shorten shot time, decrease temperature
Watery / Thin
- Problem: Too little coffee or channeling
- Solution: Use more coffee (18-20g), distribute evenly, check tamping
No Crema
- Problem: Coffee too old or ground too coarse
- Solution: Use fresher beans (7-21 days post-roast), grind finer
