Coffee from Tanzania
Tanzania - Coffee from the Roof of Africa
At the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro and around the Ngorongoro Crater grows some of East Africa's most expressive coffee. Tanzania combines Kenyan brilliance with its own distinctive character.
Growing Regions
Kilimanjaro / Moshi
The best-known region. Volcanic soils and elevations of 1,400-1,800 m yield vibrant, fruity coffees with wine-like acidity.
Arusha / Ngorongoro
Around the Ngorongoro Crater. Complex coffees with berry fruit and floral notes.
Mbeya / Ruvuma
In the southwest near Malawi. Softer, chocolatey profiles with nutty finish.
Flavor Profile
- Bright acidity – less intense than Kenya but elegant
- Blackcurrant and citrus
- Wine-like depth with long finish
Peaberry Coffee
Tanzania is famous for its Peaberry coffee (Caracolillo). About 5-10% of all coffee cherries contain just one round bean instead of two – considered particularly intense and aromatic.
